I had an idea in my head for a while and decided to give it a whirl. The idea started with my love for Michael Miller's Children at Play On Parade fabric. I just love the scene with the kids, animals and balloons! So, I decided to use part of the panel as the top quilt, without piecing and add a cute pieced back from my stash. The pieced back is in shades of pinks and purples and I quilted with some simple organic (aka not exactly straight) lines. I love how it turned out and hope it is well loved in its new home!
Between the holidays and a busy day job, I have had my hands full! I have not spent nearly as much time in the sewing room lately as I would have liked, however I do have a few projects in the hopper.

In fact, I am a lucky participant in a sewing class dedicated to curves, hosted by the fantastic Rachel at Stitched in Color. I have learned a lot so far, although I admit to being a little behind in my homework! :)

The first couple projects were basic skill builders:

Then it was on to a clamshell pillow! I just love how this turned out with the solids! The cutting was much easier than I expected, using a couple of Rachel's tricks!

This weekend, I hopped on the Rainbow Road bandwagon. I am just in love with this block and can see an entire quilt using this technique in my future! For this project, I made the block and added some Bella solids in a shade of gray to make a good sized baby quilt top. I love, love, love how it turned out (please excuse the poor pressing job, I folded it up and then decided to take pictures...)!

Now, off to get some things done around the house. If I can be extremely productive, I will be able to carve out a little extra sewing time!
While there, I fell head over heels for Cotton + Steel! I had been drooling over the fabric online for some time, but had resisted the urge to add to my stash. But seeing the prints in person proved to be too much to resist! I have big plans for the mustang and arrow prints for Christmas!
I have been a busy little bee this evening in my sewing room. An adorable lamb costume, of course!

I started a tradition last year of making a costume for my youngest niece as a bit of an experiment. I usually stick to quilting and making things for the home (pillows, mug rugs, etc.), so this has been a fun change of pace for me with adorable results!

This is where it all began...hundreds of cotton balls and a large pack of hot glue sticks!

I made the hat from scratch using scraps from an old white t-shirt using a tutorial from Sew Liberated (here). It was much easier to make than I expected. I used Bella cotton solids for the edging rather than a knit fabric to avoid a special trip to the fabric store.

And VOILA!

I cannot wait to see the little lamb is action! :)
I wrote about it about a month ago (here) and am happy that it is still plugging along. I was finally able to get all the rows stitched together into a generous throw that is close to a twin size. The solid navy backing just arrived on my doorstep as well, so I can happily proceed with basting, quilting and binding!
The picture is not great since it was overcast and the grass is brown. I will have to get better pictures of the quilt once it is finished!
Fall has arrived! We spent some time last weekend cleaning and organizing closets and I came across some leftover fabrics from projects I worked on a while back. During a break from organizing (aka procrastinating!), I was able to whip up these two beauties!

I made a similar quilt top in twin size for my nephew a few years ago. The panel of the football field from the bundle made a perfect backing!

These two were made using the triangle ends from a herringbone quilt I made a while back. With a border added, they are now the perfect size for babies in the local NICU.

It has been a lot of fun quilting for charity this week! I plan to add many more quilts to the donation stack in the coming months. I am always looking for worthy ways to donate them too. Any favorite drives or charities out there?

This quilt, along with the two from yesterday's post and a couple more that I will finish up this week will be donated to a local hospital NICU as part of a collection that my chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild is hosting.

Have you checked out all the other quilts donated as part of this drive? It is very inspiring to see what everyone else is doing and read posts about where the quilts will be donated. You can check it all out at Quilts in the Que.
I would love to say that I have been overly busy at the sewing table for the past few weeks, but that has simply not been the case. My favorite pastime has taken a temporary back seat to a few other things needing attention around the house.

This weekend I was determined to spend a good amount of time stitching away to my hearts content, which is music to my soul! I recently purchased a large grab bag of fabrics from Fat Quarter Shop. Many of the prints were not my usual taste, but the price was a steal of a deal that I could not pass up. So, I decided that I would use many of the prints for charity quilts.

The timing of this purchase was especially perfect since I was also hoping to contribute to the 100 Quilts for Kids campaign!

If you have not already heard about it, Quilts in the Que is hosting the annual quilt drive which encourages the donation of quilts to the charity of choice. My selected charity is a local hospital's NICU, as part of a collection by my chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild. I jumped at the chance to help out since I really enjoy charity quilting and have a new stash of prints from the grab bag which are perfect for this purpose.

So......I whipped up two (and a half)!

It was a welcomed change to be back in my sewing room this past weekend! I took a break for a bit to brush up on my canning skills and get some tasty treats preserved for enjoyment this fall and winter. But, it feels great to be back behind the machine!

I wanted to work on something new, but something that would keep me coming back for more. I think this project was a success in that department!

I agonized for a long time about what to do with the fabric that was provided. I had a plan, then I changed my mind. With the deadline fast approaching (this Friday), I FINALLY finished! I am calling this quilt "Splash" and I just love how it turned out. My only regret is not having enough time to make it bigger, but clearly that was my fault for procrastinating. I used up all the charcoal fabric that I had and my last minute order for more did not arrive until after I finished.... But, I guess that means there may be a similar quilt in the not so distant future?!
I love the idea of a good purge of all the lovely bits and pieces that have accumulated over time. Some are leftover pieces from projects that I worked on, others pieces were sale fabrics that I just could not resist or were purchased for projects that have yet to be started. Have you ever done that? Fallen in love with fabric only to get busy and fall out of love with it?! I may have a few instances of that in my stash... So, I decided to jump in a do a little purging myself.

My first purge project tackles two birds with one stone. Great friends of ours have decided to move back to Ohio to be close to family. I wanted to send them off with a gift that would make them both smile and remember all the good times we spent together. So, rather than purchase new fabric I turned to my stash to see what I could come up with. I decided to make pillow covers and appliqued the state of Virginia on one, since this is where we all met, and Michigan on the other since that is where my husband and I are from. On the back, I added a little humor with mustache prints. Facial hair poses a bit of an inside joke in our circle of friends. I just love how they turned out and so did our friends.
We were blessed to have the opportunity to travel back to Michigan to spend time with family and friends. Despite the long drive there (and even longer drive back), we had a wonderful time. We spent a few days at my favorite childhood place of all time enjoying late night bonfires, lawn games, fishing, and quality time with family.

As soon as we returned home, I had my hands full with our weekly CSA share. I was shocked that we had two overflowing large crates full of deliciousness that I needed to find something to do with! So, I decided to try a little refrigerator pickling starting with zucchini pickles and dilly beans. They have been in the fridge for a few days already and I have only tasted a small sample. I am hoping to crack them open and start enjoying them this weekend!

I will be back soon to share about my progress in the sewing room over the past few weeks! I hope to make a lot of progress there this weekend as well.

It was not exactly marked as high priority on my to-do list, but I just couldn't help myself with making a few blocks. Then, they were so quick and addicting that I just kept going! In fact, I currently have it basted in 2 sections and I am quilting using a quilt as you go method. I was able to quilt half on Sunday so I only have half to go! If I really focus this weekend, I may just get it done in record time!
I had time to whip up my first plus quilt top to welcome a new addition to a Coast Guard family. I included prints from Dear Stella, Michael Miller and other bits from my stash in nautical prints as well as others in navy, aqua and white. I just love how it turned out, although the pictures do not exactly do it justice. I need to work on my outdoor quilt photography!
I finally finished up the queen size wedding quilt that I have been working on and today just happens to be the 1 year anniversary for the happy couple. Although they will not receive it for another week or two, I am feeling accomplished for finishing it up relatively on time.

The green damask print was repurposed from the table runners at the reception. A quilting cotton was specifically chosen with this dual purpose in mind. The pattern is my variation of Puddle Jumping by Thimble Blossoms and the quilt blocks feature prints from the Happy Go Lucky collection by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. The binding is a stripe print from Bonnie and Camille's April Showers collection. I used a quilt as you go method and quilted it in two large sections. I am pretty impressed with how it turned out. It is actually the largest quilt I have quilted on my sewing machine. Yay!!

The 1 year anniversary deadline for the wedding quilt on my to do list is fast approaching and I am happy to report that I have made significant progress! I used the Puddle Jumping pattern from Thimble Blossoms, but put my own twist on it with a small white border around each block in addition to the sashing. I used a quilt as you go method and have both halves quilted. It is close to finished, now I just have to decide on the backing and binding fabrics. I always seem to wait until the last minute to decide on these. Does anyone else do that too?

I wish I lived closer and could spend the day with my own fantastic mom!

This weekend has been wonderful...full of gardening, catching up with great friends, cooking and sewing. All my favorite things (minus the weeding part of gardening)! I have so many quilt projects on my to do list that I sometimes have trouble deciding what to work on when I do have spare time. I am overwhelmed by all of the ideas floating around in my head, the many projects in already progress, and all the pretty fabric that is screaming pick me! Does anyone else have this dilemma??

Fortunately, I was able to pick a project and make progress yesterday and today. I started the first quilt top a few weeks ago and was able to finish up a baby size and make a second similar one with the leftovers. Yay! Two baby quilt tops down and many more to go!

I have a wedding quilt to make and have been indecisive for months on the pattern and fabric until this week. My starting point is a green damask print that was used for the table runners at the reception, which I decided to pair with prints from the Happy Go Lucky collection by Bonnie & Camille for Moda. I also decided on the Puddle Jumping pattern by Thimble Blossoms. I just love how it is coming together so far. I have eleven blocks done and many more to go, but the blocks are coming together quickly and easily.
My sewing time lately has been pretty limited, but I still found a little time to start another quilt top with lots of delicious fabrics that remind me of spring. I just love how it looks so far and have yet to decide how large it will be. So far, it is the perfect size for a baby quilt, but I have a feeling I will not be stopping here! :)
Creative time fuels my soul and is my ultimate stress reliever!

One goal this year is to do a better job this year of using the fabric that I have on hand rather than buying so much new....but no promises that I will always be successful! There are so many beautiful fabrics out there and it is tough not to indulge! However, I have quite a stash of beautiful materials just begging to be used.

So, I decided to pull out a project that I started several months ago. It's a broken herringbone block by Play Crafts (tutorial here). I shelved it for a long while and forgot about it until I started going through my shelves on Saturday. I just love all the fabrics and now have enough for a baby quilt. I just cannot decide if I want to stop there or make it bigger!

I just loved all of the pictures that I found of ticker tape quilts, both with raw and more finished edges. So, I decided to try it for myself using scraps from the Reunion by Sweetwater collection for Moda. I probably have enough scraps from this bundle to make a lap quilt!
I love many things....and I am currently loving my latest finish! I always seem to love each and every quilt, which makes parting with them challenging. I keep telling myself that I need to make two of everything so I can keep one for myself. Maybe one day I will actually start taking my own advice!

My first Swoon quilt is now complete! I used the quilt as you go method and am pretty pleased with the result. I cannot wait to make another!
